WEST GATE BRIDGE – ASPHALT & MEMBRANE REMOVAL WORKS

Project Overview

The Starbuck Group has delivered early-stage works on the West Gate Bridge resurfacing program for over a decade, consistently securing repeat engagement for these time-critical works.

As one of the first trades mobilised during the annual shutdown, we are responsible for the removal of asphalt and waterproof membrane across the bridge deck, allowing subsequent crews to commence resurfacing within tight timeframes.

Works are typically undertaken during the Boxing Day shutdown period and require careful planning, resourcing, and execution within a constrained possession window.

Scope of Works

  • Removal of asphalt surfacing from bridge deck
  • Removal of existing waterproof membrane
  • Operation of excavators with breaker attachments
  • Use of positrack loaders for material handling
  • Bulk haulage and off-site disposal of materials
  • Preparation and handover of clean work areas for following trades

Key Challenges

  • Fixed shutdown window with non-negotiable deadlines
  • High-profile arterial infrastructure with zero tolerance for delays
  • Coordination with multiple downstream trades
  • Night works and holiday-period resourcing

Safety & Compliance

All works are delivered in line with strict traffic management, safety, and environmental requirements associated with major road infrastructure.

Careful planning and controlled execution ensure the safe operation of plant and equipment within a high-risk environment, while meeting Tier 1 quality and safety expectations.

Project Snapshot

  • Location: West Gate Bridge
  • Scope Length: Approx. 863m of bridge deck
  • Duration (2025/2026): 24-hour continuous works program
  • Environment: Major arterial bridge under full closure

Capability Outcome
This project demonstrates Starbuck Group’s ability to deliver time-critical works within compressed shutdown periods.

Through refined methodologies, experienced crews, and strong coordination, we consistently deliver efficient outcomes and seamless handover to following trades on one of Melbourne’s most critical transport assets.
