Hurstbridge Line Duplication

The Starbuck Group was appointed to work on the Hurstbridge Line Duplication project, specifically the Greensborough to Montmorency section as part of Victoria’s Big Build, Level Crossing Removal Program.

The project was executed by an alliance including Acciona, Coleman Rail, WSP, and Metro Trains Melbourne. It aimed to duplicate approximately three kilometres of track between Greensborough and Montmorency, and 1.5 kilometres between Diamond Creek and Wattle Glen.

Pre-occupation works involved carting 6,500 tons of quarry materials in holding yards in preparation for occupation works. Occupation works commenced in March 2023, with round-the-clock activities throughout. This phase included removing existing track formations from Greensborough Station to Para Road overpass, disposing of 46,000 tonne of rail ballast and clean fill, and importing structural fill, bottom ballast, and top ballast for reformation of approximately 2 kilometres of duplicated train lines.

Despite facing challenging weather conditions, including an unusually wet March and April, the project continued. By the end of April 2023, trains were running along the new duplicated track and servicing the new stations.

Road Infrastructure Projects

Westgate Bridge

For over a decade, the Starbuck Group has collaborated with Boral on the Westgate Bridge project. With works beginning on the evening of Boxing Day and continuing through the holiday season, our team are one of the first trades on site, mobilising a fleet of small excavators equipped with breaker attachments, positrack loaders and tip trucks, we remove the asphalt and membrane from the bridge deck in preparation for the new surface to be laid. We also manage the off-site removal of material, leaving a clean area for the subsequent trades to continue with works.

Operating on a strict schedule, we have refined our approach over the years to streamline the process into a single shift. We are proud to say that our involvement in this project has enhanced the overall program due to increased efficiencies as well as well-planned resources and management throughout our section of works.

Westgate Tunnel

Starbuck Plant Hire has been providing cartage and disposal services to the project since 2019. We have successfully carted more than 500,000 tonne of both rock and soil from various areas of the project.

Bulk Excavation Projects

Starbuck Excavation is a specialist in bulk earthworks. Check out some of our projects below:

The Selection, Ringwood

We conducted a bulk excavation of 16,000 cubic meters for a two-level basement featuring a suspended ramp. Loading out from street level posed challenges, yet we successfully finished the project on time without sacrificing quality.

Curve Apartments, Essendon

We undertook an 18,000 cubic meter excavation for a basement at a former service station site, posing challenges due to both odorous fill and contaminated rock, constituting roughly half of the excavation area. Collaborating with our sister company, Starbuck Plant Hire, we meticulously managed proper disposal of materials and executed the project safely, all while staying within budget constraints.

Canopy Apartments, Eltham

Excavating 26,000 cubic meters for two connected basements in a shared apartment complex, each extending 1.5 levels across both sites. Our scope encompassed intricate excavation tasks such as strip footings, pad footings, lift and stair overruns, along with civil works. Despite the project’s intricacy, we successfully completed these works two weeks earlier than planned, all while upholding high standards of quality.

Preston Crossing, Preston

The successful removal of 13,000 tonne of asbestos-contaminated material and the efficient management of the entire export process were key achievements of this project. Additionally, 5,000m3 of unsuitable fill was exported while 15,000m3 of recycled, compactable materials were utilized for pads. This project, covering 3 acres, included the excavation of a 7,000m3 basement and export of 11,000m3 overall. Through teamwork, the project ensured both safe asbestos disposal and environmentally friendly material recycling, setting a high standard for comprehensive site management.

Civil Projects

The Starbuck Group can also assist with civil needs, providing comprehensive solutions tailored to each project’s unique requirements. Some of the projects we have been involved in include:

Cade Park – Bolinda Road, Campbellfield

The Starbuck Group began its extensive works on this project in early 2022. Responsible for managing the bulk earthworks, we carried out our operations while carefully conserving and improving the existing protected habitat of native frogs, which utilize the pond in this area for breeding purposes. Ensuring the ongoing protection of this species throughout our activities was a priority.

The intricacies of the job included the importation of 100,000 cubic metres of compactible fill sourced and procured from Starbuck jobs across Victoria. This material was required for the construction of the batters surrounding the frog’s pond. Additionally, we oversaw and executed the creation of piling pads as part of our responsibilities.

Surcharge Mound, Bundoora

This project involved the creation of a surcharge mound aimed at evaluating the ground’s integrity at the property formerly run as GB Landfill. Given its history as a landfill site, this was essential in determining the land’s suitability for development.

We were responsible for creating a piling pad to facilitate the installation of 1,000 wick drains, which played a critical role in enhancing soil drainage and stability. This effort was essential for improving ground conditions and optimizing drainage efficiency.

We sourced and imported 5,000T of crushed rock and 75,000 cubic metres of compactible fill under level 1 supervision for the construction of the surcharge mound.

Remarkably, the entire project was completed within a span of three months, with all compaction requirements met at level 1 standards. This accomplishment underscores our commitment to efficiency, quality, and meeting project deadlines.

Plenty Valley Christian College Dam Reestablishment

The Starbuck Group employed a multifaceted approach in undertaking bulk earthworks for the reestablishment of the dam. Our focus was on restoring both its structural integrity and functionality. Through careful excavation, embankment construction, and land grading, we ensured the successful restoration of the dam, enhancing its resilience and functionality.

Rural Rail and Bridge Upgrades

At the Starbuck Group, we’ve been delivering services for the enhancement of rail and bridge infrastructure in rural Victoria. We’re proud of our role in bolstering the safety and efficiency of transportation networks throughout the region, and we’re committed to supporting the development of rural communities through these improvements. We offer an array of services to these projects, ranging from supplying heavy equipment equipped with GPS technology to providing comprehensive haulage solutions.

Culvert Construction – Rural Victoria

This project spanned across multiple sites in Rural Victoria, with the Starbuck Group using a systematic approach to replace the existing culverts with upgraded ones. Through careful excavation and precise construction techniques, we ensured that the new culverts were seamlessly integrated into the existing infrastructure, improving water flow and overall structural integrity. By leveraging our expertise and attention to detail, we not only upgraded the culverts but also contributed to the long-term sustainability of the surrounding environment and transportation networks.

Specialty Works

WSX – Marvel Stadium

Starbuck Plant Hire had the pleasure of being awarded the contract to source, stockpile, and transport 6,000T of approved clay material for the WSX 2019 and 2023 Supercross track construction. Working alongside the WSX event team and specialised track builders, we completed the importation process on both occasions well ahead of schedule.

Given that the event takes place within Marvel Stadium and the track is constructed on grass, all participants in the supercross track construction take care to minimize any harm to the surface beneath the protective layers. This is achieved through vigilant monitoring of truck and machinery movements throughout the entire construction process.

Starbuck Plant Hire executed the exporting of material, beginning after the racing events concluded and all freightliners exited the arena. Working non-stop for 18 hours alongside the track build team, we successfully exported all 6,000T of material, finishing ahead of schedule once again.

Starbuck Plant Hire has been involved in various supercross and motorcross events held in Melbourne, and we are proud to execute these projects ahead of time, every time.

Residential, Industrial & Commercial Projects

Starbuck Excavation services various residential, industrial and commercial projects across Victoria, providing cut and fill earthworks, as well
as bulk excavation. Not only do we have a proven history in bulk excavations, but correspondingly detailed excavations including road
construction, public amenities, landscaping and plumbing & trenches.
